Legionella is a naturally occurring bacterium found in freshwater sources such as rivers, lakes, and ponds. At low levels, it typically presents little risk. The issue arises when Legionella enters man-made water systems, where the right conditions can allow it to multiply quickly.
Hot and cold water storage tanks, pipework, showers, taps, and cooling systems can all provide an ideal environment for growth if water temperatures are poorly controlled, water stagnates, or systems are not properly maintained. Even treated mains water may contain trace amounts of Legionella, which can proliferate within hours under unfavourable conditions.
When Legionella bacteria reach higher concentrations, they can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially serious and sometimes fatal form of pneumonia, spread through inhalation of contaminated water droplets.
